I've spent some time over the past few months doing phone banking for a local candidate for Congress (John Hall, in NY-19, who is running against Sue Kelly). During that time, I haven't spent nearly as much time as I'd like, because I have three very active boys who I take to their various and sundry extracurricular activities. So I really want to make the little time I can contribute to Hall's campaign effective.
However, phone banking is rarely satisfying, what with the overwhelming majority of calls being hangups, answering machines, or people telling me "So-and-so's not home" after I tell them why I'm calling. It's getting to the point where I am wondering whether these calls are having any positive effect at all.
So, I put it to you: is there really a point to making GOTV calls? Is this really making a difference in the result on Election Day?
